Tips For Buying Used Chainsaws
A chainsaw can be an expensive investment, so it should come as no surprise that many people would rather settle for used chainsaws instead of purchasing one that is brand new. Often times these can be found at a good price and it may last you almost as long as a new model would depending on luck and how savvy of a buyer you are. However, if you are new at owning one of these machines then you will have a more difficult time in purchasing used chainsaws.
One of the most challenging aspects of buying a used chainsaw is knowing where to go in order to find them. Probably the first place you can go to find used chainsaws for sale is your local dealer with chainsaw supplies. Sometimes they get models in for trades, or they may have had to repossess one whose owner could no longer afford to make the payments. If you do not have any luck here, then try to visit local yard sales to see if anyone has one that they are looking to get rid of. The classified section of your local newspaper is also an excellent place to look. Finally, visit some web sites that hold online auctions and see what is available.
Probably the biggest risk involved with buying used models is the fact that most people only sell things that no longer works. Therefore you really have to be careful and never buy anything unless you are sure it works well. One thing you can do is insist on trying out the saw before buying it. If during this demonstration it shows any bad signs such as bellowing black smoke, sounding unusual, stalling out while running, or having difficulty starting, you know to just walk away and hope for a better opportunity to come up.
If you want to purchase used chain saw parts instead, the same steps apply. If you own a chainsaw already and are simply trying to find a place where you can purchase the necessary parts then you may also want to buy them used. More often than not however it is in your better interest to simply buy them new. If you are really on a budget however, head over to the junkyard closest to you and see if they have what you need. If they do then you can usually walk away with them for just a few dollars so it is always a good idea to give this a try before you spend too much on new ones.
As you can see, buying used chainsaws can be risky, but if you cannot afford a brand new one then this is the only solution you have. Also remember that while online auctions open up a lot of new models to choose from, you also lose the ability to try it out first and these sales are almost always ‘as is.’
